The Royal Rumble is one of the most talked about pay-per-views in the WWE because it is the starting point for the "Road to Wrestlemania" and typically crowns the #1 Contender for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Yet this year the Royal Rumble Match means so much more as the company's most prestigious Championship is on the line and will be awarded to the Winner.
Such circumstances have only occurred once before, the 1992 Royal Rumble, which is regarded as one of, it not thee, best Royal Rumble in the WWE's history. The Match resulted in Ric Flair walking away as the new Champion and spurring the feud between Hulk Hogan and Sid Justice.
In the wake of John Cena's shoulder surgery that will have the Franchise Superstar sidelined for six to nine months, the WWE will need to get extra creative in order to hit a home-run at the Royal Rumble and pave a historic path to the most attended Wrestlemania event ever, which will take place at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Although I don't know what the WWE is planning, as I true Smark and devout fan, I am obligated to give my predictions and booking for the 2016 Royal Rumble...
1. Have Roman enter Number One
Despite the Big Show previously announcing he will be the first entrant in the Match, I believe Roman Reigns will need to take that initial spot in order to fully build the story of the Authority placing all odds against him. With his title on the line, I think it would only be right for him to adopt the moniker from his merchandise and to go "One Versus All" through all other 29 entrants.
2. There needs to be a surprise entrant that has a legitimate chance of winning.
Whether that is Daniel Bryan, one of the WWE's rumored signees, or a NXT call-up, the audience needs to be taken aback by someone they did not expect to enter, let alone win the Royal Rumble. Although I believe the WWE roster is extremely talented, I can only see a handful of Superstars with a legitimate chance of winning and a surprise entrant could jumble everyone's expectations and result in an awesome finish.
3. Do not have Dean Ambrose or Kevin Owens win.
I love Dean Ambrose and Kevin Owens and believe both are legitimate main event performers that deserve a chance to be WWE World Heavyweight Champion, but the matches between these two have been too great and this rivalry needs to continue all the way to Wrestlmania. I would like to see both
go deep in to the Rumble and eventually take each other out, adding additional heat to the feud. Either wrestler winning the Rumble or lasting longer than the other would destroy or greatly hinder the current storyline - which I believe would be a big mistake.
4. Break Up the League of Nations
Initially I thought the League of Nations was meant to be the new Corporate Faction but that has not been clear and I am unsure what their purpose really is, other than beating the Uso's. I would like to see a spot somewhere near the middle of the Royal Rumble match that pits each member against each other forcing them to turn.
5. Do not have Roman Reigns win.
It's obvious Roman Reigns is the golden chicken of the WWE, but I don't believe him having the company's top Championship title works in building his character. I would like to see Roman go very deep in to the Rumble and even beat his record for most eliminations, twelve, that he set in the 2014 match, but I believe the real money maker feud for Wrestlemania would be Reigns vs. Triple H. This has been left on the table since the TLC pay-per-view in December and I'm hoping for the next domino to fall at the Royal Rumble. Triple H should be a late entrant in the Rumble and ultimately being the one that eliminates Roman.
6. Have Bray Wyatt win.
Bray Wyatt has been on the cusp of being a top tier WWE Superstar for the past few years and I believe this is his chance to take that top spot. With the addition of Braun Strowman, his Family has become stronger than ever and if all four are in the Royal Rumble Match at the same time, which I believe should happen, they will be an impossible mob to eliminate. What I hope will happen is that the four members of the Wyatt Family will be left at the end with the number thirty entrant coming out - Brock Lesnar. Lesnar will initially get pummeled by the four Wyatts but will eventually go in his Beast Mode and eliminate the three auxiliary members, leaving Bray to sneak up behind Brock and toss him over the top rope. This would lead to a Brock Lesnar versus Bray Wyatt feud leading in to Wrestlemania and some memorable back and forth promos between Bray and Paul Heyman.
